Pleads Guilty To Selling Counterfeit Handbags

Photo of Andy Rush Deborah Williams, aged 51, sole trader of Zebra clothes shop in Woodgate, Rothley, admitted selling counterfeit designer handbags at Leicester Magistrates Court. Ms Williams was fined 170, ordered to pay costs of 600 and pay a victim surcharge of 20. Following a complaint that counterfeit handbags were being sold from Zebra, Trading Standards Officers executed warrants at Ms Williams dress shop and home address. Officers seized counterfeit Gucci, Armani, Michael Kors, Hermes and Christian Dior designer handbags. Ms Williams shop was legitimately selling a range of ladies clothing but she had bought the fake handbags whilst on holiday in Turkey and was selling them in her shop. David Bull, head of Leicestershire County Council Trading Standards Service, said: Dealing in counterfeit goods is illegal and unacceptable. Trading Standards will take action against any traders who are found to be breaking the law, as legitimate retailers and the jobs of their employees need to be protected from unfair competition. Pam Posnett, County Council cabinet member for trading standards, said: Consumers need to have the confidence to buy designer goods from high street shops. Trading Standards officers are always reminding consumers to be wary when buying goods online or at markets and car boot sales. They should be able to trust local retailers. If you have information about someone selling counterfeit goods email telltradingstandards@leics.gov.uk or contact Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506.

The company uses its own 13-point inspection to verify the pieces are authentic and top quality. In fact, they’re currently working on a patent for this verification process. While Cassandra obviously knows what she’s doing now, she says, initially she had no business being in business. "I have a business completely by accident. Completely by chance. Along the way I have made so many mistakes," she said. Still, Connors says the business is healthy.
